Qualifiers Advance to Westchester Amateur
104th Westchester Amateur host GlenArbor.
HARRISON, N.Y. (June 7, 2023) -- James Allen of Scarsdale topped the leaderboard at Harrison Meadows as players aimed to qualify for the 104th Westchester Amateur Championship. The round was forced to finish on Wednesday due to multiple suspensions of play due to weather on Tuesday. Overall, 31 players advanced to GlenArbor in Bedford Hills, N.Y., for the July 5-7 championship, with reigning champion Ryan Coughlin of Westchester owning the No. 1 seed in the match play bracket. Those advancing included a host of players with MGA and WGA titles to their names, setting up a strong field for the championship.

Allen's score consisted of an eagle on the par-5 ninth, three birdies and 12 pars that displayed his steadiness. Cameron Besaw easily punched his ticket to his home club finishing at 2-under 69, with an eagle on the par-4 sixth highlighting his round. He tied for second alongside Ben Loomis of Winged Foot and Peter Tomlinson of Sterling Farms.
Two-time Westchester junior champion Douglas Beney of Westchester and Jack Woods tied for fifth at 1-under 70, rounding out those with sub-par scores.
Ben Carpenter of Darien tied seventh with an even-par 71. Carpenter, Besaw and Allen are all past MGA Carter Cup champions in the field that will be seeking their first success in the Westchester Amateur. Two-time Westchester Public Links champion Erik Stauderman of Casperkill also posted even-par to earn his spot int he bracket at GlenArbor.
Two-time defending Westchester Mid-Amatuer champion Nick Taylor, an MGA eClub - NYC member, locked up his spot by carding a 1-over 72.
Past Westchester Boys' champion Owen Walsh of Mahopac carded a 2-over 73 to tie 14th, while another former Boys' champion in Jud Langille of Metropolis carded a 3-over 74, as did last year's Westchester Junior champion Jonathan Oakes of Ardsley. Tyler Donnellan is yet another past Westchester Junior champion that advanced, doing so in a 10-for-9 playoff on Wednesday. There was also an eight-way tie for second and third alternate slots.
Tuesday morning's tee times were delayed due to weather, but play moved along once it started. Around 2:30 p.m., the horn sounded again due to dangerous weather. Play resumed at 4:35 p.m., with the last 10 groups teeing off. While 32 groups completed their 18-hole qualifying round, the remainder came back on Wednesday as play halted due to darkness.
While GlenArbor is a three-time Westchester Open host, it will welcome the Westchester Amateur for the first time. The Westchester Senior and Super Senior championships take place concurrently, with its qualifying taking place June 16 at The Summit Club at Armonk.
